His career as a writer began in the late 1940s, but it was his 1972 novel Cockfighter (later adapted for the screen by Monte Hellman) that announced his name to a wider audience. This year’s catalog for the New Art Dealer’s Alliance annual art fair in Miami, NADA, was conceived and designed by PictureBox and Project Projects. The concept is of a fair in bookform: A portable exhibition. Each gallery was asked to submit a single piece of art to the book. The accumulated images are a capsule image of contemporary art in 2008, from the studio to the marketplace. It’s a visual tour de force of ideas and styles. Hipgnosis was the biggest and best design firm for the biggest and best bands of the classic rock era. Formed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell in 1968, Hipgnosis was a graphic design studio specializing in creative photography and working mainly in the music business designing album covers for many rock ‘n’ roll bands including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, 10cc, Yes, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath, Paul McCartney, Syd Barrett and Styx, among others. For a dozen years Hipgnosis created timeless rock iconography. For the Love of Vinyl is the first book to document their output in detail, focusing on over 60 package designs – from cover to label – written about in entertaining detail by the men who created them. Also included are short essays by musicians (such as Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason), artists (Peter Blake) and fellow designers (Paula Scher) on their favorite covers, as well as unseen photographs and ephemera. Complementing it all is a lengthy critical and historical text examining Hipgnosis and its legacy. For the Love of Vinyl will be THE rock book of 2008.

A gorgeous, hilarious and beguiling artists book by Katherine Bernhardt. Bernhardt excels at vivid imagery with, as The New Yorker noted “slashing brushstrokes and dripping, vivid color … used to depict images of women”. Bernhardt herself compiled this volume as a collection of her work about fashion models and celebrities. Her paintings sit next to their inspirations: a vivacious but cutting portrait of Kate Moss sits across from its source photograph, and the stuff of fashion magazines – Bernhardt’s main source – is treated with as much care as Bernhardt’s own paintings. Both the body of work and its roots are explored in detail. Also included is a photo-tour of Bernhardt’s studio, candid snapshots, and two revealing essays by Nick Stillman and Lisa Ruyter.

Two old friends are bound together in a two volume, full color set co-published with the fine gallery ZieherSmith in NYC. One 64 page hardcover features the paintings and drawings of Eddie Martinez. The other focuses on the paintings and drawings of Chuck Webster. These two Brooklyn-based pals, represented by Zieher-Smith, New York, are enamored of the romance of paint, making bold, colorful statements on canvas and paper. Martinez combines fearlessly expressive paint handling with a feel for cartoon imagery and personal symbology. Webster, on the other hand, makes minimal talasmanic paintings that are formally rigorous and impeccably polished. Together they present a friendly yin-yang of contemporary painting. The books are linked together by an interview with the artists and a selection of their collaborative drawings. Essays by Joao Ribas and Geoffrey Young are also included.

Due to his unapologetically squalid subject matter, Nemoto has long been a controversial figure in Japan–clashing violently with mainstream Japanese morals–and is just now receiving some critical success there. One set of stories, entitled Public Works, details massive structures being erected across a landscape. Plot is pushed aside in favor of sheer formal verve as we watch buildings about which we know nothing, come into being. The other set of stories, Combats, is one sequence after another of elegantly choreographed battles. Yokoyama builds things up and tears them down. Comics have never seen a talent that combines this level of formal ambition with exquisitely drawn depictions of fashion, art and architecture. This is the most surprising and revolutionary graphic novel released this year. Take a chance on a modern manga master.

This anonymous book is the product of a lone late 1990’s genius from Providence RI, and it channels all that scene’s energy into comedy gold. 64 pages of hilarious cartoons about dogs, people, money, and fashion. This is like Bloom County for peace punks. Not to be underestimated.

Cheryl Dunn’s first retrospective book delves into the worlds of street art, graffiti and life on the margins of America. For Dunn, street art isn’t just about images, it’s a way of viewing the world. In artists like Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, and Chris Johanson, Dunn found a share sensibilities: they were all documenting urban life and its discontents in their own unique ways. And so she documented the artists as much as their shared subjects, along the way compiling an impressive body of portrait and documentary photography of the street art scene as well as a moving group of images of urban America. The accompanying sixty-minute film documents thirteen American artists (Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, Mike Mills, Ed Templeton, Margaret Killgallen among them) who were invited to Tokyo to mount simultaneous exhibitions in 2001. Through candid interviews, riveting footage of art in action (and a massive demolition derby in the streets of Tokyo), the film captures these artists just before they broke through to the mainstream. The DVD includes almost a dozen extras. Cheryl Dunn is a photographer and filmmaker based in lower-Manhattan. She has organized and participated in exhibitions in venues including Deitch Projects, The Luggage Store and New Image Art.
