The comic artists and graphic novelists represented here are mainly from the generation of independent author-draughtsmen, whose subject matter tends to be offbeat and transgressive - and sometimes controversial. For Julie Doucet and Debbie Drechsler 'real life issues', approached in autobiographical styles, supplant moralistic tales of good and evil. The true realities of life within a war zone are sensitively charted in Joe Sacco's Palestine, while everyday characters become unlikely heroes in the stories of Daniel Clowes and R. Crumb. An essay by Paul Gravert illuminates the long-standing love affair between fine art and comics, while Hayward Curator, Emma Mahony sets the contemporary context in her introductory essay. A specially commissioned picture-essay by Kim L. Pace, together with drawn self-portraits and questionnaires by the contributing artists, make this a unique publication.

During the summer of 2002, Seth Tobocman taught art to small children in a village just outside of Ramallah, Palestine. Upon returning to America he was faced with the difficult prospect of explaining to his parents, life-long Zionists, just what he was doing in Palestine. To help initiate the conversation he collected twenty pages from his sketchbook of the trip and sent it to them. The drawings created a starting point from which they could talk about their differing political and religious beliefs concerning the Middle East. Portraits for my Parents, a collection of charcoal drawings with simple captions such as "This is a modern man", "These are Palestinians", "These are Israelis" strips away the historical, religious and political complications surrounding the situation in the Middle East. He takes no sides, simply depicting the faces, clothes, and postures of the inhabitants of this contested land. In sharing these private drawings, he allows us all to participate in the dialogue he had with his parents. How can we stop killing each other? How can we learn to recognize each other’s humanity?

Throughout the fifties, Los Angeles-based Charles Brittin (*1928) was the unofficial house photographer for the beatniks who coalesced around the artist Wallace Berman. Brittin had settled in Venice Beach in 1951, and his tiny shack on the beach became a hangout for the creative circle around Berman, which included actor Dean Stockwell, artist John Altoon, curator Walter Hopps, and poet David Meltzer, among many others. Brittin's photographs of this time and place evoke a period of tremendous upheaval and creativity in America, when avant-garde culture was largely underground and its protagonists were almost completely shut out of mainstream culture. In the early sixties, the focus of Brittin's life shifted dramatically when he became involved in the antiwar movement, and by the end of the decade he was devoting most of his time to the Black Panther Party. These two very different social revolutions are at the heart of Charles Brittin: West & South.
