Yokoyama’s NEW MANGA as explained by the author himself:
This work is a sequel gekiga to The Room of the World Map (published from East Press in Japan, and PictureBox in the United Sates), and a character with the same face appears in some parts of the story. The title Iceland does not refer to the country of the same name but to the high-latitude areas of the Far North. I am not sure whether the hazardous shark that appears in the beginning of the story really exists in a frozen sea. Also, the ecosystem depicted is rather unnatural for such areas because I doubt there are trees lining the streets in the Far North. The taxi with circular wind shield that appear towards the end was a kind of vehicle actually used by the United States Coast Guard, and I drew the flashy uniform worn by the driver by copying, from the picture book, Japanese General, Nagamasa Yamada’s Dutch uniform. Next in line with this gekiga series is the sequel, Hanazono (Flower Garden, tentative title), but the production schedule is still undecided.
