Paul Smeley, a Dutch photographer, wins first place in the World Press Photo contest. In The Hague. In the year 2102. In the Historical Story category.
During his post-win interview, Paul explains that he is a time traveller, which is how he teleported himself into Auschwitz during WWII, and entered the body of a German lieutenant, Uwe Jungmann. He had a camera surgically implemented in his eye, so no one could see it. While in Auschwitz, searching for objects to photograph, he finds a woman with a baby in her arms. He smiled at the baby and the baby smiled at him. At the entrance to the gas chamber, as the woman realized what was going to happen to them, Paul, as Lieutenant Jungmann, gestured for her to hand the child to him. She does, hope flaring in her eyes. She believed this was the only way to save her baby boy.
SS lieutenant Uwe Jungmann was a commander of the guards and so had access everywhere: railway stations, the offices of Doctor Mengele, the gas chambers, the crematory… And so, the little boy survived. But how else has Paul, this mysterious photographer, inserted himself into history? And what has been the impact?!
